Yes and no. Whether or not you can use generative AI (GenAI) is largely up to your faculty and the specific courses you are taking as policies differ between lectures and faculties.

There are some uses of GenAI which normally are fine such as:

  • Suggesting a topic and narrowing down your topic.
  • Suggesting keywords, search phrases, and recommending library databases.
  • Helping to create an outline for a paper.
  • Having an intellectual sparring partner.
  • Clarifying concepts and simplifying academic jargon.
  • Summarizing sections of academic articles.

However, unless you are specifically allowed to, never let a GenAI write any portion of your text for you as this could count as academic fraud.
